The AGM is always the most important meeting of the year, but it is even more so this year. Having had to cancel last year’s, and with the pandemic still causing all manner of havoc, we need a good turnout to make sure we continue to have a strong, effective and democratic UNISON branch at Sussex. To enable us to conduct our official business and make important decisions – including electing next year’s committee officers and agreeing the new budget – it is essential that we have enough members to make the meeting quorate. So please do join us, and encourage other members to do so too.

Get more involved in your branch

Volunteers are crucial now, more than ever! If you would like to consider getting more active in your branch then this is the opportunity for you. Make a real, positive difference to your colleagues here at Sussex.

Many members of your current committee will be standing for re-election, but ANY member can put themselves forwards for ANY of the branch roles – just let us know before the meeting if you are interested in any of these, or would like to know more. Please email Jack (jjn21@sussex.ac.uk) for an informal chat.

You will receive all the training and support you need, and if you are directly-employed by the University, you may also be entitled to some paid time off your current Sussex role to help you carry out your union duties.

There are several posts which are either already vacant, or where the current officer has decided to stand down. Posts we are particularly keen to recruit to include the following:

• Health and Safety Officer

• Communications Officer

• Environmental Officer

• Young Members’ Officer

Members who register on Eventbrite and attend the AGM will be entered into a prize draw to win Goodmoney vouchers. These can be spent online at a range of Brighton-based small businesses.

If you are an existing member, and you recruit a new member between now and the 30th March, you will BOTH receive a guaranteed £10 Goodmoney voucher*.

*Existing members need to email the new member’s name to c.colburn@sussex.ac.uk before noon on the 30th March. We will then check our member’s list to verify the date that they joined. This date needs to be between 22nd January and 30th March.

If you recruit more than one person, you will receive £10 for each new member, up to a maximum of £100.
