UNISON 'Pride in our work' ballon at Pride rally

UNISON at the University of Sussex

Welcome to your University of Sussex UNISON branch. We represent staff from across all areas of the University spanning many different roles.

Our members are Professional Services and other support staff working in a wide variety of locations and teams across campus.

Wherever you work, and whatever job title you have, we are here to support you by:

  • helping to protect your jobs, terms and conditions
  • negotiating with the University employers over your annual pay rise*
  • challenging threats to your pension**
  • publicising the wide range of member benefits available
  • providing information, advice and an opportunity to talk confidentially
  • being a first point of contact for any issues affecting your working life
  • letting you know about free training and other opportunities to develop your skills, interests and careers
  • providing opportunities for members to get to know each other, stand together and look out for each other

Use this website to find out more information about your committee and how we can support you, branch news and events.

UNISON is involved in the annual pay negotiations for staff directly-employed by the University. Unfortunately we are not able to directly influence the pay of campus members employed by other organisation (e.g. Chartwells) – just one of the many reasons we always oppose outsourcing of staff!
** The UCU union have sole negotiating rights for the USS pension scheme, so while we can support members experiencing issues, we cannot directly influence how the scheme works. Most UNISON members at Sussex are in other pension schemes, including USPAS or USPSS, where we do have negotiating rights.
